A 'building the plane as you fly it' moment

Q&A with Twitter's ethical AI lead Rumman Chowdhury

"Some tech workers in this sector feel their jobs are centered around reactive problem-solving, rather than proactive work searching out bias and other platform issues. Do you think structures like this should change in the industry, at Twitter and other companies? How
I’ll cut some slack to the industry as a whole right now and say things are still very new and undefined. So even if we were to say, “Our company is dedicated to being proactive and identifying risk,” the first question is: What does that mean? And what does that look like? To be fair, we don't have good standards in the industry as a whole. We don't have good rubrics and guidelines. So to be fair to the industry and the people trying to do this work, we currently live in a world of firefighting and reaction because these are the best tools we have at the moment."
